This is a continuation of the series Marketing The Arts where you get to go behind the scenes of Into The Woods as it prepares for its Opening Night on October 22, 2009 at The Players Club of Swarthmore. Watch the whole series to see what it takes to produce a large-cast musical like Into The Woods.

Have you ever been in a show? Do you know the excitement of Opening Night?

That's what happened on Sunday, September 27, 2009 for Into The Woods at The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater. Rumors had been a smash hit, opening the season, and now it's time for Sondheim and all those terrific characters out there in the Woods.

Theatre Fun For Young People From Grade School Through High School

Because these 2007 interviews were recently requested by Becca Shulbank-Smith, I decided to display this whole article again. The students in the interviews will really be surprised how much they have grown since this first appeared on another of my blogs. Here it is:

Young People's Theatre Workshop (lovingly known as YPTW), which has been molding students from 10 – 18 years old, has been working its magic for about 30 years in Swarthmore, PA USA (outside of Philadelphia).

Classes in acting, singing, and dancing mixed with experiences on stage, in cabarets, working on technical theater, and in camp for a full week on the Eastern College campus in St. Davids, PA produces well-rounded, well-spoken young adults who live for theater.

Listen here as two groups talk about their experiences. Unrehearsed and unedited, you'll experience the energy that runs through their veins, their love for each other, their respect for their teachers, and the vitality for life they share because of their love of theater.

Recorded on Tuesday, June 26 before their peers, these two interviews are dedicated to Claudia Carlsson the Executive Director and her staff including Joe, Darrin, Liz, Paul, Page, Beth, and the many directors, musicians, and parents who help them throughout the year.

Theatre Fun For Young People From Grade School Through High School

Young People's Theatre Workshop, located outside of Philadelphia, PA USA, is a place where kids can learn, have fun, and meet their new best friends. Theatre, games, fun, music, excitement: it's all here under the guiding experience of loving and talented faculty.

YPTW is about learning about theatre while learning about ourselves. Children involved in theatre learn to use their imaginations, to celebrate differences, to reach out to an audience and to one another, and to gain self-confidence through taking risks. And the classes they take in the fall and spring and the fully-stage productions in the Winter (through 8th grade) and Spring (through 12 grade) prepare them for more theater activities AND (we feel confident) for life: many of the skills they learn (team work, self-expression, projection, speaking on their feet, etc) will serve them well throughout their lives.

Many of the YPTW staff members are certified teachers who spend Monday to Friday with children yet they all recognize that their time spent with these students is somehow different.

They get to watch these children grow over a period of years. Many students start with YPTW in grade school and stay through high school. Some even come back to teach or help backstage after graduation.

But even if a student's visit to YPTW is short, they will leave with a greater knowledge and appreciation of the theatre arts and perhaps of themselves.

A gun shot in the night, a missing wife, and a house full of guests… no, it's not Agatha Christie – but Neil Simon! The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater opens its 99th season with Rumors, a Farce.

Simon is usually known for his character-driven comedies full of human truths. But with Rumors, he steps out of his box to give us a pure farce: full of evasions, lies, slamming doors, and assumed identities.

It’s not supposed to be a particularly remarkable evening – just an anniversary dinner party for an affluent suburban couple and their friends. But it starts off with a bang (the aforementioned gun shot) and culminates in a wildly implausible explanation of the whole tangled plot to a skeptical policeman.

Director Bohdan Senkow of Clifton Heights has assembled a cast from around the Delaware Valley (near Philadelphia, PA USA) to bring this script to The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater stage, including: Michael Steven Schultz and Margaret Brink of Swarthmore, Donna Dougherty of West Chester, Carl Heyde of Wayne, Rosalina Francesca of Philadelphia, Jim Carroll of Springfield, Melissa Kearney of Linwood, Richard Paci of Lansdale, Schuyler Morris of Radnor and Joe Spiecker of Horsham.

Rumors, a Farce runs September 10-13, 17-20 and 24-26. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are at 8pm and Sunday matinées are at 2pm. The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is located just minutes from the Blue Route and I-95 at 614 Fairview Avenue in Swarthmore. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students (18 and under or college students with ID). All tickets and ticket packages are available at the box office, or may be purchased in advance by visiting www.pcstheater.org or calling 1-866-811-4111 (ticket sales through TheaterMania). Now meet Rebecca Diamond who first appeared at The Players Club Theater in 1993 when she starred in the original musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame as La Esmeralda, the young, beautiful maiden that both Quasimodo and the evil Archdeacon desire.

Rebecca went on to play in The Secret Garden and Guys and Dolls at PCS and has been seen in numerous other theaters.

Watch and listen as her excitement tells you why she decided to audition for Into The Woods for the part of The Baker's Wife (which was the Tony Award-winning part when Into The Woods played on Broadway).

Here meet the two princes: rivalry between brothers and over women. Their songs are powerful as the whole story develops and you learn what they've been through and where they're going.

Come back when I feature more interviews with some of the actors, show you the rehearsals, let you see the costumes coming together, and finally the on-stage look of the completed production. Deep, intense, meaty interviews in a documentary? Nawwww… but some snippets of the director directing, actors rehearsing, the set and costumes coming together. Unless you're an actor and have been back stage many times, you'll see something here you haven't seen before.

My family has been at The Players Club of Swarthmore for five generations as directors, actors, choreographers, music directors. I was IN my first production in 1957 and have since directed 14 productions on the main stage. If there is one thing we know, it's what it takes to produce live theater.

My available time has been limited the past few years but I have stayed close by photographing each production for a Lobby Display.

But for THIS season…. when PCS announced it would produce Into The Woodsfor its second production, I stepped up to help with the marketing. And no sense doing it the same way everyone else does, since I teach unconventional marketing methods (especially for online marketing) I have to use them too, right?

Watch this series as I take you us behind the scenes to see what it takes to produce a large-cast musical like Into The Woods, which opens October 22, 2009.
