The Fourth Key: Relationships – What Produces Trust? Protectiveness

Everything that happens between you and a client must remain just between the two of you.

The Fourth Key: Relationships – What Produces Trust? Protectiveness

Everything that happens between you and a client must remain just between the two of you.

Think of it like the doctor-patient confidentiality. (Do I REALLY want all the neighbors to know what prescriptions I'm taking? No way…)

If a client is to be happy with you and trust that what he says remains between the two of you, he will open up and tell you what you need (so you can do the best job to help him) when he completely trusts that you will protect that information and not give it to anyone else.

However, if he does NOT feel that confident in you, he will hold back and you won't be able to do your best work.

Think of THIS too – when you tell details about some of your other clients, you can be assured that your client is thinking "If he will tell me about his other client, who is he going to tell about ME?!"

You NEED for your clients to be open with you, so treat everything they say as confidential, and you'll be safe!

And so will they!

And now – leave me a comment here to tell me what YOU feel about this!

Best,

Grow Your Business Online And From Home

Work-at-home entrepreneurs have many choices when it comes to marketing. Below you'll find 50 simple ideas that you can adapt to your own needs.

Some ideas are geared toward online audiences while some target your neighborhood and involve getting to know local businesspeople.

It's a good idea to choose a few methods from each category and make them work for your own business. Give each one a try to see which works best for you and your business.

Online Marketing Ideas

1.	Start a Blog and write 2 – 3 times a week. Start simply at WordPress.com or Blogger.com.

2.	Post articles online that others can use with your byline and signature information – visit EzineArticles.com.

3.	Regularly comment on blogs that relate to your business – you can find some great examples at AllTop.com (which list the top blogs in the world and divides them into categories for easy searching). (In fact, look for my RaisingGreatFamilies.com blog there! We're proud to have it listed.)

4.	Visit Meetup.com and instigate a gathering relevant to your line of work OR join an existing group.

5.	Check out Podcamp.org or Barcamp.org to see if they work well for your business.

6.	Create your own Facebook profile.

7.	Join groups on Facebook that relate to your business and post regularly.

8.	Create your own Facebook PAGE and use it like a mini website to promote your business.

9.	Become a source on HelpAReporterOut.com.

10.	Suggest a story about work-at-home entrepreneurs to a blogger or offer a post for other people’s website by joining BloggerLinkUp.com.

11.	Write an ebook and offer it for free on your own website or Facebook Page.

12.	Send a press release about your business to PRWeb.com or PRLeap.com.

13.	Reply to questions on Wiki.Answers.com and similar sites.

14.	Open a Twitter account and send 2-3 tweets a day about what you are doing in your business.

15.	Distribute monthly eNewsletters to your clients (having captured their names on your website or Facebook Page).

16.	Put your business in both online and print directories.

17.	Use Google to search for forums that are in your niche (use your keyword followed by the work “forum” to find these) and become involved with the chatter on the forum (NEVER “sell” on these – participate and leave your name with your contact information below it).

18.	Write pieces for other companies' eNewsletters.

19.	Keep in touch with classmates through Facebook.

20.	Search Twitter for people who tweet about your type business and begin to tweet back and forth with them (find them using keywords at Search.Twitter.com).

21.	Optimize your blog by using keywords in the titles of your posts.

22.	Videotape short weekly talks and publish them online.

23.	See if Affiliate Marketing is right for you – search Clickbank.com.

24.	Trade blog ads with other work-at-home entrepreneurs.

Neighborhood Marketing Ideas

25.	Join groups like the Lions Club or the Chamber of Commerce to Network.

26.	Ask potential clients about their needs and follow up with them – don’t be bashful: if they say “NO” you’re in the same place as if you hadn’t asked them; if they say “Yes,” then you have new business!).

27.	Ask clients for recommendations.

28.	Send out a mailing to local businesses and then follow up with two additional mailings (we call that Sequenced Mailings).

29.	Get other work-at-home entrepreneurs to package their promo material with yours.

30.	Offer referral bonuses to clients.

31.	Offer the first meeting for free with a potential client.

32.	Mark the end of large projects with your clients in a public place – make it festive, memorable, and fun.

33.	Attend local business mixers to meet new people and collect THEIR business cards – it’s less important to give yours out (though certainly do that if someone asks for it). Then follow up with everyone you met and keep them informed about how you can do business together.

34.	Print and distribute business cards, using BOTH sides of the cards (and make an offer on the back – something like “Email for my free report, 7-Steps To Business Success.”

35.	Leave your brochures with businesses where your target clients might frequent – but make this brochure gives an offer for some free information NOT a three-panel brochure about your business that most people don’t want to read (just as you don’t read most other people’s brochures like that).

36.	Sponsor a local event that would appeal to your target client and then tell them.

37.	Print coupons and put them on local bulleting boards – again, offer some free information.

38.	Speak about your business at local events.

39.	Partner with an entrepreneur who has a business related to yours.

40.	Schedule a regular mastermind meeting with several entrepreneurs in your area – make time to chat about what each is doing and find out how you can help each other.

41.	Visit your local bookstore each week to plan your schedule (I call that my Dreaming, Planning, Scheming Time) and chat with folks who are there – you never know what other local business person might need your services.

42.	Give a class in your area of expertise – local school districts often sponsor these.

43.	Volunteer your time to local charities.

44.	Write some ‘case studies’ that closely parallel work you just completed and send them with a PostIt Note greeting to prospects.

45.	Contact local businesses to find the right person to invite for an early morning cup of coffee – and suggest s/he tell you more about his or her business – when you offer to learn about someone, they often tell you a LOT (much of which can help you find more business for THEM and for YOU).

46.	Create a 3-part postcard mailing campaign to prospects in your area.

47.	Keep in touch with former clients.

48.	Develop a contact at an employment agency for leads.

49.	Put coupons for your services in gift bags.

50.	Track down local giveaways and donate something.

Some of these ideas will cost a bit of money but many of them are free and only require your time and thought.

Make time each week to explore a new marketing option. Be creative and see how you can tailor each item to your specific needs and let us know how you're doing.

Give us progress reports so we can all be inspired by each other's success. And leave a comment here with YOUR ideas that can be added to this list – let’s grow it to 100 Simple Marketing Ideas!

Best,

Walmart stores open and small stores close – some out of fear, some because they approach everything they do as a "commodity," and some because they were only "hanging on" with a few loyal customers who now finally abandon them for the big box store.

Though we all know Walmart now, what ever happened to:

Woolworths
Caldors
Montgomery Ward
Janeway
And how many others can YOU name?

Sears is struggling without a well-defined image; Kmart has been on the ropes for years; Target seems to be flourishing, but if it reduces itself to the "low-price seller (and cellar)" it too may go the way the others have gone.

And so might Walmart.

Seriously: ten years ago would you have predicted Sears's plight? Do you know that that really tall building in Chicago is NO LONGER the Sears Tower?

Having the lowest price is a death knell. Avoid it at all costs.

Best,

The First Key: Price

Harry Beckwith in this section of his book, The Invisible Touch, used a great little, simple example of how often PRICE temps people.

It's John Travolta being surprised when Uma Thurman orders a $5 milkshake in "Pulp Fiction." Right, just a milk shake: no alcohol, no gold pieces, just a milk shake. (THESE days, that price is not so outlandish, so you might have to play along as if I had just said the "$100 hamburger" that was in all the news a few years ago. Just imagine a really high price.)

For though my economic classes said that high prices limit those who can purchase, none of the emotional impact was discussed.

People want to try things that are expensive. (Travolta never would have asked for a sip of a $2 shake.)

Drive Them Crazy With High Priced Vehicles (Pun Intended!)

I just received an invitation on Facebook from the owner of our local Ford Dealership which is now a Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealership. He will unveil his new line of Lincolns within a few days.

He will have his most expensive, flashiest, glamorous cars on display. This will NOT be the time for the economy models – this is the time to bring out people's envy, lust, desire.

So whether it was Uma's $5 shake or Lincoln's $100,000 car, people are tempted by high prices.

So raise yours… or at least have ONE version of whatever you sell at that high price. Drive them all wild with envy, for who knows: the temptation just might get to them!

Best,

Your own website is at the center but Facebook is VERY important!

People ask me HOW I do WHAT I do when it comes to Social Media Marketing, Online Marketing, Direct Response Marketing, Video Marketing and Email Marketing, and how I advise my consulting clients.

Here is a short video to show what I call the Universe Model of Marketing:

My Main Website is at the center like the Sun is at the center of our Universe.

Surrounding the Sun are Planets that point into the Sun (like Facebook, Facebook Pages, Hubpages, YouTube, Forums, Other People's Websites.

And pointing to the Planets from even further away are the stars (and in this analogy, these are Twitter, Article Marketing, and Bookmarking Sites, to name a few)

Watch this short video as I show you WHAT and HOW I do my marketing!

Now YOU Can Learn How To Use Facebook MUCH Better!

Facebook is becoming more and more important. If you want to learn how I do what I do (and even more!), you should look at these free videos and pdf files presented by Robert Grant and Ian David Chapman. These two really Get It… and they're helping LOTS of people already (as their materials will show you).

Theatre Fun For Young People From Grade School Through High School

Young People's Theatre Workshop, located outside of Philadelphia, PA USA, is a place where kids can learn, have fun, and meet their new best friends. Theatre, games, fun, music, excitement: it's all here under the guiding experience of loving and talented faculty.

YPTW is about learning about theatre while learning about ourselves. Children involved in theatre learn to use their imaginations, to celebrate differences, to reach out to an audience and to one another, and to gain self-confidence through taking risks. And the classes they take in the fall and spring and the fully-stage productions in the Winter (through 8th grade) and Spring (through 12 grade) prepare them for more theater activities AND (we feel confident) for life: many of the skills they learn (team work, self-expression, projection, speaking on their feet, etc) will serve them well throughout their lives.

Many of the YPTW staff members are certified teachers who spend Monday to Friday with children yet they all recognize that their time spent with these students is somehow different.

They get to watch these children grow over a period of years. Many students start with YPTW in grade school and stay through high school. Some even come back to teach or help backstage after graduation.

But even if a student's visit to YPTW is short, they will leave with a greater knowledge and appreciation of the theatre arts and perhaps of themselves.

Fallacies of Marketing

The distinction of what Bundling is needs to be clear here:

What I Do: When making proposals to consulting clients, I focus on Facebook (profile and Pages), WordPress, Twitter, video and video syndication sites, Hubpages, satellite blogs, bookmarking, article sites, and more. When I work as a photographer, I focus on the event photography (like a wedding, bar mitzvah, or family portrait), individually printed images, images on CD, etc.

What I Do NOT Do: I don't offer photography with my consulting, video with my photography, etc.

Bundling the way Harry Beckwith presents it here means don't become integrated across business lines (like a bank with an insurance company) and then offer both services: your staff won't know how to sell both, their past practices will keep them from being successful, and your clients will look to specialists in each area, rather than settling for a generalist.

For us entrepreneurs, this isn't such a big deal because we know to specialize and to stay focused. Some larger businesses seem to fall into the "bigger is better" trap, and then get themselves in trouble.

Best,

Research And Its Limits

Do we know ourselves?

Do you do the same thing over and over when faced with similar circumstances? Do you brake for a yellow light one time and speed up and clip the red light another?

Do you eat lots of fruits and vegetables or do you gorge on fatty meals and comfort food?

Do you ever do anything that disappoints yourself, wish you hadn't said or done something, wish you could take back what you said?

Of course.

But research often bases its decisions on the idea that we'll do the SAME thing over and over again… and we don't.

And what do politics teach us? How many times have the polls said one thing but when the population is behind the closed polling booth and they vote a different way, how often have the outcomes been different from what people SAID they would do?

Often. Ask Jimmy Carter when he ran against Ronald Reagan for one prime example.

So when people TELL McDonald's or Pizza Hut or KFC one thing and then do another, we really shouldn't be surprised.

People make lousy guinea pigs… we just don't do the same thing we say we're going to do.

Remember that.

Best,

How does the word get out about a music group that is just starting?

The same way it does for one that has been around for a while: tell the world about them.

So it's your turn to learn about Combust!

No, don't use expensive advertising (institutional advertising that the group can't afford) but rather Social Media Marketing and direct response marketing that sends out the message and expects a reply back.

I knew many of the members of this band and was excited to go when invited. I grew up in Swarthmore, PA USA and went through the school system.

And it's terrific to see these young folks playing so well and with such great enthusiasm.

Gabe Kroch, Ravi Culleton, Ian Morse, David Glanzman, and Caitlin Vanderwolf (who, unfortunately, had another engagement last night but she'll return to the group soon).

Hot new sounds in their original pieces and great rendition of a cover song.

Here is a "short" from some photographs I created last night. More will come – you'll hear more about this group!

Today I met my daughter, Liz, and her fiance, Chris, at a photographer's studio.

Fascinating, interesting, curious – all describe the meeting. It's the first time I have had to help meet a photographer when it came to my daughter: Liz and Chris will be married next year and need a professional photographer since I will be busy being "just the dad" of the bride.

Taking time to be with your family has many rewards

Today I met my daughter, Liz, and her fiance, Chris, at a photographer's studio.

Fascinating, interesting, curious – all describe the meeting. It's the first time I have had to help meet a photographer when it came to my daughter: Liz and Chris will be married next year and need a professional photographer since I will be busy being "just the dad" of the bride.

It was interesting to meet Erinn, to see her style of photography, to see her wall portraits, to learn what excites her about photography.

And it was great to be able to leave my work behind at such an important family time.

If I had a "regular" job, I couldn't have been there!

If I were tied to a desk, on a time card from an employer, I would not have been able to join Liz and Chris at this important meeting.

One of the reason I'm a work at home dad is so that I can be open to the important things of my life.

Like my kids. My elderly parents. Taking trips to conferences when I want to (as I did two weeks ago and as I will do at the end of this week).

Quality of Life REALLY Matters

For those of us who really MUST be entrepreneurs, the quality of life would drop with a huge "thud" if we had to go to someone else's office every day. Commuting, taking our lunch (or going to a restaurant), finding parking, paying for all that gas, and wasting all that time on the road… YIKES… I never want to do all of THAT again.

Life Changes WAY Too Fast

My father used to give a talk when he'd point out all the things we use in daily life that weren't even invented 10 years earlier. Now this pace has increased many times over… so I thought you'd enjoy seeing this short video.

If might take a few moments to load – please be patient – It Is Worth It!

Keep Learning – So Much Is Changing SO Fast!

As that video showed, life is ZOOMING past us: be sure to enjoy your family before it's too late.

AND, keep learning. Keep coming to this site and others that share great information with you. As you just saw, so much of what we use now didn't even exist at the turn of the century, and change is happening even faster every day.

WordPress (the software for this blog) was hardly known and seldom used. Google was an infant. Facebook was just for college kids (oops, it hadn't even been started yet!) and Twitter wasn't even thought of! Cell phones were here, but not with all the color, photos, and text messages.

Stay in touch – your very survival depends on it.

And remember to spend time with your family – it's why we do all of this!

Best,

Be involved with your community and then get away from work to see yourself better

Why was it so inviting?

* I'd be sleeping on a church floor for five days with nothing but the thin padding of my sleeping bag to comfort me.

* I had so much work to do for my marketing consulting and blogs to write for my UltimateWorkAtHomeDads.com website and wouldn't be near a computer to do it.

* I'd be surrounded with middle school kids, helping to guide them, lead them, drive them (and the more I drive the easier it is for me to fall asleep).

* I'd be away from my home, my wife, my bed, my air conditioning while cleaning driveways, feeding hungry people, walking around a rainy downtown area looking for "good" and stopping to pray.

Oh, sure… there were plenty of reasons to say NO, but still I was called to help, to lead, to grow, to be taught.

And so I went.

Now my 5-part video blog is ready. And it's on my website RaisingGreatFamilies.com and can be found here: See Charlie Seymour Jr's video blog about Mission Possible 4 in Nashville – Click Here!

My THREE photo Albums are already on Facebook and all the images are provided for use by anyone who went on the trip. The first Album starts here (viewable to all Facebook members who friend me): http://www.facebook.com/CharlesSeymourJr#/album.php?aid=27033&id=1079948815

SO…

* What changed over the week?
* What impact on others did we have?
* How were everyone's eyes windows into their souls
* To where does our journey continue?

I can answer SOME of that… but YOU have to answer the rest.

This was a meaningful week – I hope you can share some of it with us and I hope you get something out of it: I know I have.

Charlie

PS: The video blog gives my thoughts, feelings, emotions during the week in Nashville. View this now on my family-site, RaisingGreatFamilies.com here: See Charlie Seymour Jr's video blog about Mission Possible 4 in Nashville – Click Here!

Social networks – Yep: believe it or not, people study what people are doing on Social Networks.

Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn – What Do They Say About YOU?

Social networks – Yep: believe it or not, people study what people are doing on Social Networks.

And you can just imagine: when they study something, they find results and then work to attach meaning to them.

Such is the case of the Social Network Survey that Anderson Analytics produced, as reported in Advertising Age.

You've been analyzed, your likely interests prodded, your buying habits studied, and your media consumption ranked.

For example: They ask if you use Twitter. If YES (whoops, I DO), then you are more interested in SEX than the average Facebook, MySpace, or LinkedIn user.

If you like LinkedIn (I still haven't quite figured out how to make it work, other than asking people directly for help), then you're more likely to watch soap operas.

Is MySpace number 1 for you, then you probably don't like exercise.

Wow… all that from asking a few questions and tabulating the results?

Which Social Network You Favor Says A Lot About You

Did the information above surprise you?

The survey studied the demographics (WHAT a large number of people do) and the psychographics (WHY people do what they do) of social network users and those who don't use them.

Nearly 110 million Americans (60% of those online) use social networks (like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc). Users tend to spend a lot of time on these networks (have you ever looked up and it seemed like the clock FLEW by when you were on Facebook… then you understand how this can be true!).

The average social network user goes to the social sites five days a week, four times a day for a total of about one hour a day. (WOW!)

A SUPER-CONNECTED 9% stay logged in all day and are on constantly checking what's new.

Here is a quick overview which might interest you. And remember, this was conducted as background for advertisers, so they'd know where to concentrate their advertising dollars.

Facebook Users

40% are married, 80% are white, 6% are retired.

Facebook users skew a bit older and are likely to be "late adopters" of new technology (gosh, I'll have to point that out to my younger sister who recently joined!). Facebook users are extremely loyal, with 75% saying Facebook is their favorite site with another 50% having increased their time on the site recently.

Twitter Users

31% buy coffee online, 16% work part-time, and 43% could live without it.

Twitter users have lots of interest, but skew really high in all news categories, liking restaurants, sports, politics, personal finance, and religion. (Yep… sounds like my interests, all right…). They are more likely to buy books, movies, shoes, and cosmetics. They like pop culture with music, TV, and reading ranking high on their lists (I wonder if it counts that I read while watching TV?).

This group is also very entrepreneurial (right with that one too!). They use Twitter to promote their blogs ( you can find mine at http://bit.ly/24eYTO ) and they do business with it.

The group is not that attached to Twitter with 43% saying they could live without it (hey, maybe they haven't gotten into it as much as I have!).

MySpace Users

60% are single, 23% are students (Those numbers explain a LOT!).

I admit that the "noise" of MySpace keeps me away. Oh, sure… I used it to promote my daughter, Liz's, CD (http://myspace/LizSeymour) because people in music are all over MySpace.

But that doesn't mean I like it. Nor does it mean I actively recommend it for my clients and their marketing, because I DON'T.

It's not as business-friendly as Facebook, but as you see from the statistics, the markets aren't the same either.

Content in MySpace is mostly specific hobbies or photos of family and friends. The users are more likely to be Afro American (9%) or Hispanic (7%) than other social sites. And if you're looking for singles, clearly that number attracts attention.

LinkedIn Users

57% male, 12% seek info on gambling (I have NO idea where THAT came from!)

The highest income averages are here in LinkedIn but it may also be the hardest of the "social" venues to crack. The main reason stated (for business) for joining is MUCH higher here than for any other site, so networking for business, job searching, recruiting are all high on the list.

The users are more likely to be members of a gym, spa, yoga, and golf as well, reflecting both the business interest and the higher economic level.

Hey, I'm in it and use it, but don't feel any real "connection" to anyone in LinkedIn, the way I do with, say, Facebook.

And excluding video games, these folks own more electronics like TVs, iPods, DVRs, and Blue-ray players.

So… there you have it. Did you see yourself in any of these categories?

Interesting, if nothing else!

Best,
