Don’t Mistake A Customer’s Purchase for Caring Ready for a brutal truth? Customers don’t care if you have a mortgage to pay, need their sale to win a contest at the end of the month, or are having shipment problems. They don’t care what you like, where you went to school, or what sports you prefer. What do customers care about? Themselves. And since you are a customer as well as a merchant, you know this is true when you wear your customer hat. As a merchant, you are in front of the customer ONLY because they believe at that moment you can help solve a problem. You are there by invitation ONLY. And you must concentrate on THEM, THEIR needs and desires, how to produce what THEY want and when THEY want it. No need to chit-chat about yourself. Simply ask the customers questions about what THEY want and then LISTEN for the answers. When you preplan the questions and show you care about the customer, your sales will improve. Don’t feel it’s a script from which you can’t vary, but know you have certain things you’d like to learn and ask them about those topics. Listen, Clarify, Summarize, Determine… how you can help the client and how your product might solve their need. Say “you,” stay away from “I” and reap the rewards. Charlie Seymour, Jr. presented this information at the Sales Summit for Business Development Resources, where he served as guest lecturer, presenting timely information on Sales, Marketing and business Development Success. If you have a favorite marketing method and will share it with all of us, I'll be sure to include your name and contact information here in our Ezine. Share Your Marketing Ideas Here! |

Twittering. What are you doing so far with Twitter?
The rules may change if Google buys Twitter, so it’s time to start building your list.
And are you building your personal, let-all-my-friends-come-to-my-list type Twitter list or are you targeting.
My suggestion is to target.
You can see my Ultimate Work At Home Dads Twitter account here:
http://twitter.com/UltimateWAHDads
But here is my personal one, where I follow very few people and generally tweet with inspirational messages:
(With only 14 letters allowed after that twitter.com/ in the name, I couldn’t fit my whole CharlesSeymourJr, so I decided to put charliejr instead. Not exactly what I wanted, but it’s working ok)
It’s with this charliejr account that I send tweets AND change my status on Facebook. That is done through an “app” on Facebook and it is quite handy to be able to change the message one time and change it for both locations.
But some people were sending multiple messages through Twitter/Facebook and really confusing people who are their friends. I send one maybe two status updates a day to Facebook… but I’m MUCH more aggressive on Twitter for my other accounts.
So… set up your personal Twitter account to also update the status on Facebook and we’ll chat more about this next week!

Last week I mentioned how I tell people that I’m “on a deadline” so that I won’t be asked to waste time that I should be working toward my goals. Here’s a tip that I got from Dan Kennedy years ago: Only accept SCHEDULED telephone calls from clients. Think about it – if you are running your own business (and it’s not running you!), YOU should be able to decide WHAT to work on and when. Why should you drop everything you are doing to answer a call. It may be convenient for the person at the other end of the line to speak right now, but if it’s NOT convenient to you, let the call go to your well-worded answering machine. When you can get to it, you can email the person, tell him or her than you really want to chat but that you find it much for productive for both of you if you can know what the topic of the call will be AND that you can schedule it for a mutually convenient time so that you can concentrate 100% of your energies on your client and the discussion. Who doesn’t want to know that you will concentrate 100% of your attention on him or her when you are able to schedule the call. Then, plan times during your day for phone calls and bunch them. Get in the flow of calling clients at the appointed times, and you will be MUCH more efficient. What do you find toughest about working on your own? Tell us what we can do to help. |

Did you see my blog about Tropicana?
It seems that the marketing people for PepsiCo (which owns Tropicana) have been making less than stellar changes to both the Pepsi and the Tropicana brand and marketing.
You can see how this applies to entrepreneurs by reading the blog here:

Twitter – how do you build a large list, especially when you’re just starting out? Since we’re studying how to make Twitter effective for you, I wanted to keep this as our special. My buddy Bill Crosby has created a system that is super hot for creating a large Twitter list. If you’re new to Twitter, seeing this short video might help you better understand the benefits of Twitter. If you’ve been using Twitter for a while but your list is still puny, this is a great way to increase the size of your list much more quickly. |

Here’s something amusing, if not “funny.”
IS IT GOOD FOR PEOPLE TO BE DEEPLY ATTACHED TO PETS?
Certainly. We could learn a thing or two from our pets. Consider these habits:
- Be quiet around those who’ve had a hard day.
- Sit close, nuzzle, whimper when they do, and stare sympathetically.
- Refresh yourself by going out for a walk and fresh air.
- Run and play daily.
- Take a nap when you’re tired.
- Stretch before jumping into full action.
- Rush to greet those you love.
- Dig until you find your own bone.
- Protect your personal space and let others know they violate it.
- Be loyal to those you love.

Write Down the Directions Writing down the directions to success might help. Did you ever take a trip to somewhere new where, without detailed directions, you would have been completely lost? The path to your future works similarly. But how many people write down the main goal, sub-goals, and the individual steps that will achieve those goals? This is the most important journey of your life, and you’re heading for your destination with no directions! It’s a recipe for the opposite of success…failure. In 2002, David Niven, Ph.D. wrote a book entitled The 100 Secrets of Successful People: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It. He spoke about the need to commit your goals to paper when he wrote. “Writing down your plans, goals, and ideas makes them more real for you. Every step you take to define what you want and what you need to do to get it increases the chances that you will actually pursue these goals and someday achieve them.” |
