Charlie's Weemee

I love to work. In fact, when on a summer vacation with my family, I found I was “happier” when I was working than when I was just relaxing (and then worrying that my work wasn’t getting done).

OK… so I know that’s a problem with ME. And I know that I work so hard to provide a lifestyle for my family, even though Pam and I are now empty-nesters who love to get Stacie and Liz together with us when we can.

For example, the vacation I was referring to was when I was creating a Music Video of Liz singing for her music CD release. We went to Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, and the Grand Canyon. BEAUTY all around us. And I LOVED being with my family, but I yearned for work. (To find out more about Liz's CD, Click Here!)

And when we went on our last cruise, I worked about 6 hours a day in the computer area creating a new website… the deadline had arrived and I felt I needed to keep moving forward.

But this is MY problem… I don’t recommend it for you.

Today I’m wearing a heart monitor. The speeding heart which has been skipping beats got me worried enough that I finally went to my doctor and now to a cardiologist.

Do you know the first and most prominent symptom of heart problems for most people?

It’s death!

I don’t want that to be MY symptom. So I’m taking steps to be sure I put myself and my family first, not my work.

Say with me (which I have to remind myself often): I am NOT my work.

Really Really LIKE my work; LOVE my family.

Bless you in your own pursuits.

Charlie

Learning from the Master: People Dislike Being Sold, But Love Buying and Owning

Note: Charlie Seymour, Jr. used this information for one in his series of WalkAbout Marketing, available on UltimateWorkAtHomeDads.com

Sales guru Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Red Book of Selling says, “If they like you, and they believe you, and they trust you, and they have confidence in you… then they MAY buy from you.”

He goes on to say, “Why do people buy?” is 1,000 times more important than “How do I sell. No, 1 million times more important. No 1 BILLION times more important.”

Isn’t it amazing how …if people get any sales training…they get training in “How To Sell” and not “Why People Buy”?

If you have ever taken a course in selling, who taught it?

Did you ever take a class on why people buy? Who taught that?

Maybe you think you already know why people buy, but then don’t do much about it. Here are some early warning signs that show you don’t really know why they buy (and believe me, we’ve all heard one or more of these):

1. You get price objections.
2. You have to send bids or proposals.
3. They claim to be satisfied with their present suppliers.
4. No one will return your call.
4.5 The economy is slow.

Gitomer says, in no certain order, here are some reasons why people do buy:

1. I like my sales rep. NOTE: LIKING is the single most powerful element in a sales (or any, really) relationship.
2. I understand why I am buying.
3. I perceive a difference in the person and the company that I am buying from.
4. I perceive a value in the product I am purchasing.
5. I believe my sales rep.
6. I have confidence in my sales rep
7. I trust my sales rep.
8. I am comfortable with my sales rep.
9. I feel there is a fit with my need and the product or service being offered.
10. The price seems fair even if not the lowest.
11. I perceive that this product or service will increase my productivity.
12. I perceive that this product or service will increase my profit.
12.5 I perceive that my salesperson is trying to help me build my business in order to earn his/hers. My salesperson is a valuable resource/advisor to me.

A classic Gitomer line (attributed to MANY people) is “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” When you understand why your customers buy, you can then understand their needs and wants, and can care about those needs and wants in a way that affects your bottom line.

Previous topics include:

- I tell people that I’m “on a deadline” so that I won’t be asked to waste time that I should be working toward my goals.

- I gave you a tip that I got from Dan Kennedy years ago: Only accept SCHEDULED telephone calls from clients.

- I presented something that I’m “famous” for (and the envy of many of my friends stuck in a “job”): my DPS Time – Dreaming, Planning, Scheming.

- I told you about SKYPE.

- I told you to stay away from TV, radio, newspapers, etc until late in your day – keep your engine running well with positive, uplifting, spiritual or meaningful messages instead.

- I suggested that you watch other industries, not just your own.

And here’s another: Join a local business group to stay in touch with people, listen to what they are working on, and see how you can help.

For 4 weeks over two months, I’m in charge of the education of our local Business Development Resources (BDR) group. I’m taking that opportunity to teach about marketing, recording it, and creating new “products” to sell or give away.

Sell… if the material contributes to a project I’m working on, I’ll add my MP3 recordings to that product to build up the value of the product. In this case, I’m creating Say It So They Buy It and I’ll add some of my recent recordings to that product.

Give Away… to build credibility. Speak about something that you are good at, passionate about, where you can help other people And ALWAYS record yourself so you can ALWAYS have the material. I use my iPod and a small recorder attachment made by Belkin. Add in a small lav mic and I’m in business.

Simple. Just a bit of editing (almost NONE) and the recording is ready. Post online and I’m in business.

See how this can help YOU too!

Here’s something amusing, if not “funny.”

Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's Mensa Invitational which once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter and supply a new definition:

13. Glibido: All talk and no action.

14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
