Charlie's Weemee

LOTS of reactions to my blog post about American Idol as nearly the Perfect Storm for marketing.

It’s not a singing competition, no matter what Simon and Randy say: it’s a TV show, it’s a product creation mega-machine (creating the end product of singers that the American public will actually pay money to see), and it’s something to watch to see how marketing can be done (Ford commercials with the “kids” having fun, pulling all 10 finalists who will tour in the summer into a few song and dance routines so that people will see what they will get when they sign up to go to their local HUGE arena to barely see the performers), and sales of songs over iTunes, though I have other suggestions for them if they want to make even MORE money.

Making money is NOT evil, so I say that with reverence.

Here’s my WalkAbout Marketing location with a recorded session about American Idol Read below for more about my blog post.

Who knew that Adam Lambert (the best singer on the show) and Kris Allen (the really nice guy) were pawns in a marketing machine!

Five Common Traits of Successful Salespeople

Successful salespeople have certain traits in common. As William “Skip” Miller states in Proactive Selling: Control the Process – Win the Sale, “…we walk in our client’s shoes…we’ve planned our meeting…and, since we’ve “been there before”, and can see the next step in the process, we ask great questions to see what THIS client wants. Then we keep checking throughout our meeting to be sure we are keeping the client’s attention AND presenting things the way this person can understand them, and we know what to do and say when we get specific replies to our questions.”

Proactive Selling:

1. They think like a customer.
2. They are proactive and always think one step ahead, and therefore they pull to control the buy/sell process.
3. They have a natural curiosity. They ask. Great salespeople do not have great answers…they have great questions.
4. They qualify from a buyer’s perspective early and often. Yes’s are great, no’s are great…maybe kills you.
5. They use the right tool at the right time at the point of attack: the sales call.

So, if attorney Virgie is helping clients work on a will, she knows what steps to take her clients through so that they can get past the idea of discussing their own mortality and focus on their heirs, to whom they will leave the estates.

Heating professional John can tell his customer what needs to be done so that the heater keeps their home warm throughout the entire winter, rather than simply when they walk to their basement to kick it every now and then.

To sell to your customers, think like your customers and proactively respond. To coin a phrase, “get inside their heads” and understand their fears, their desires, their motivations.

That’s the straightest point to a sale.

Previous topics include:

- I tell people that I’m “on a deadline” so that I won’t be asked to waste time that I should be working toward my goals.

- I gave you a tip that I got from Dan Kennedy years ago: Only accept SCHEDULED telephone calls from clients.

- I presented something that I’m “famous” for (and the envy of many of my friends stuck in a “job”): my DPS Time – Dreaming, Planning, Scheming.

- I told you about SKYPE.

- I told you to stay away from TV, radio, newspapers, etc until late in your day – keep your engine running well with positive, uplifting, spiritual or meaningful messages instead.

- I suggested that you watch other industries, not just your own.

- I said that you should join a local business group to stay in touch with others.

Today I want you to think about Setting Up A Blog.

The easiest blog to use is either Blogger.com or WordPress.com. Neither is really YOUR blog – you share the playing field with everyone else signing up there… But they are still great places to start.

Start with a topic you are really interested in. I have several, and they give me an outlet to tell the world what I’m thinking about. Here’s one for Where Did The Dream Go?

Here’s something amusing, if not “funny.”

Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's Mensa Invitational which once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter and supply a new definition:

16. Beelzebug (n..): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

17. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.
